• Key Competencies:
  • Configuring and administering Network Installation Management (NIM) for AIX automated deployments, patching, and backups.
  • Deploying Linux on Power using standard enterprise methods (e.g., Kickstart, AutoYaST) and integrating them with IBM hardware.
  • Utilizing IBM PowerVC (Virtualization Center) to capture OS images, manage catalogs, and deploy virtual machines in a private cloud model.

Domain 2: Client-Side Resource Management and OS-Level Virtualization

• Objective: Evaluate proficiency in managing system resources dynamically from within the OS and utilizing OS-native virtualization features.
• Key Competencies:
  • Executing and troubleshooting Dynamic LPAR (DLPAR) operations natively from the AIX or Linux command line.
  • Configuring and managing AIX Workload Partitions (WPARs) for application-level isolation and resource control.
  • Tuning CPU and memory settings from the client side (e.g., managing simultaneous multithreading - SMT, and understanding capped vs. uncapped processor behavior).

Domain 3: Virtualized Network and Storage Integration

• Objective: Assess the skills required to integrate and configure the AIX/Linux operating systems with the virtualized I/O resources provided by the underlying infrastructure.
• Key Competencies:
  • Configuring Multipath I/O (MPIO) natively in AIX and Linux to manage vSCSI and NPIV storage LUNs, ensuring path redundancy.
  • Implementing network high availability at the OS level by configuring EtherChannel (AIX) or Network Bonding (Linux) over virtual Ethernet adapters.
  • Managing device trees (ODM in AIX, udev in Linux) to correctly identify, configure, and troubleshoot virtual hardware changes.

• Objective: Test the capability to monitor virtualized workloads, ensure application uptime, and automate repetitive administrative tasks at scale.
• Key Competencies:
  • Monitoring virtualization-specific metrics using native OS tools (such as lparstat, topas, nmon, and sar) to detect bottlenecks in shared environments.
  • Understanding the OS-level prerequisites and configurations for clustering solutions, such as IBM PowerHA SystemMirror or Linux Pacemaker.
  • Automating OS configuration, patching, and user management across AIX and Linux virtual environments using enterprise automation tools like Ansible.
